People ask me all the time what makes good porn. What makes good porn, to me, might not be what makes good porn to you.
When I'm shooting a movie for my company, I have to make it as true to what I think is hot as possible. Of course, I get tons of ideas from fans and you try to incorporate some of those ideas that are repeated over and over. Too specific and you risk a miss. Sort of specific and you may have a hit.
The key is finding the niche of the moment, the new steak that everybody has to have at least just once.
In the adult industry that's always a moving target.
Of course, there'll always be fetishes. You'll have some that even cross into major mainstream successes like the fucking machines or the Jules Jordan-style of shooting or all the sit-on-my-face-and-smother-me sites and movies out there now.
The Asians are really, really going the fetish route. I see sites where girls get on a train and are groped and fucked by groups of young men. It's staged well and the girls "act" the victim well. That's something I could see having some legs here in the states if it were presented in the right way.
Maybe the groping is the new thing. Maybe not. I do know, though, one thing that's changing. It's not always about having young skin anymore.
Look at guys like Tom Byron and Brad Armstrong, old vets who won AVN best actor awards this year. Some of the best scenes I saw last year were older stars like Midori or Nina Hartley. I think some of the genre's newer fans who haven't seen great performers give great performances are helping usher in this older woman/man genre. Maybe I'm biased but many of these younger performers don't "put out" like the folks who were around when I started in the ‘90s. And some of them are coming back and finding success again.
These guys got into the right films, the hot niche.
And look at all the films that won this year that focused on ass - Butts are in. I remember it used to be about having no butt at all, which left a lot of black and ethnic actresses on the mainstream sidelines.
Having a big butt marginalized you. I once intentionally lost major weight to make boxcovers. I had been told the butt was too big. Now it can't be big enough. It's funny to see it come full circle like that.
Now you've got girls like Alexis Texas making major noise. She's blonde, beautiful and has a plump butt that would not have helped her get work 10 or 12 years ago. Now she can't stop working.
But the other trend in adult is something that works in all areas of entertainment. It's about star power. It's about Kobe in the NBA, Tom Brady in the NFL, Madonna and Britney and Janet and Justin and Usher in music. Stars sell. That's why Belladonna grabs a gazillion nominations and awards every year. Or Kylie Ireland. Or Tom Byron.
Of course, it doesn't hurt to have the big budgets, like in the mainstream world, to help promote your ideas.
In porn it's cool to be the underground cult thing, but I think most folks would rather be mainstream - in the J.C. Penny catalog so to speak.
And in adult, it's also about styles. People like the way Jules Jordan shoots tease or blowjobs. Or people like the way Bangbrothers or Evasive Angles shoots doggy style and big butts. So when a movie comes out by your favorite director or company, it's like a new Luther Vandross album - you don't have to hear it first, you just buy when it hits the store.
But right now, more than ever, our industry is about the hot niche: big butts, style of shooting, sex in vans, sex outdoors.
I wish I knew what the next trend will be. I know I'm loving the MILF thing as my career is gaining new momentum because of it. I love the trend towards "thick" women being loved. We don't have to be 5-11, 105 pounds anymore. You can still eat after you work.
The industry is always evolving and we've just got to keep up. I know it's fun trying.
